U.S. airline stocks dropped Thursday as carriers continued to struggle with high fuel prices and maintenance, though AirTran Holdings Inc. increased second-quarter profits by cutting costs in other areas.

Tempe, Ariz.-based US Airways Group Inc. said its second-quarter earnings fell 14 percent, but results topped Wall Street’s expectations and the carrier began recalling furloughed flight attendants and pilots.

‘Although high fuel prices will continue to have a material financial impact on our company, we are encouraged by the strengthening revenue environment and industry capacity outlook,’ Chairman and Chief Executive Doug Parker said in a statement. ‘Looking forward, we maintain our projections of profitability for the third quarter and full-year 2007.’ Read more
